The Yukon is bathed in a blanket of snow and ice. This would be the perfect time to restock the fly box with some hand
tied fly's or build that rod of your dreams. Give us a call and we would be happy to arrange a private tying session, or order
in the supplies you will need. Stay tuned for 2006 demo days and fly tying classes.
For some late season fishing head down to our sister region of Alaska and poke around the town of Haines.
Try some of the seams and pools in the upper Chilkat using mini tips with varied strip retrieves for a few winter
steelhead. Flies of choice would be brightly colored alaskabou's, GP's or the feature fly "DFO" .
With all the flesh and roe about, some dollies and cutthroat should be gorging in the upper river. Try washed out pink
huevos salmonas and flesh flies for some aggressive action in the upper 'Coot and 'Kat. Remember, flesh and eggs do not
swim, so floating lines with long weighted leaders and strike indicators, or the Teeny Chuck and Duck line, used
to dead drift offerings should be the order of the day. Concentrate on structure, as these oportunistic scavengers will
lie in wait. If rip and strip is more your style, try mini speys in charteuse and blue stripped over and under structure with
mini tips. Several sea run cutts have fallen to this tactic of late.
With all the smells of a spent salmon , be warry of ursine encounters. Although getting ready for a long Winter
snouse, bears can be seen moping about in the upper river. Carry some bear protection and make lots of noise so as to
indicate your pressence.
Have a super month. Stay tuned for Spring courses.
Take care and tight lines.
